Viton Seals for Oil, Gas and Industry
When a seal has to cope with heat, hydrocarbons and aggressive chemicals, Viton is often the first material engineers turn to. Sealco supplies and manufactures Viton and FKM seals and O-rings for the oil and gas industry, and for engineering, chemical processing and manufacturing customers around the world, from our head office in Halesowen and our Aberdeen office in Ellon.
What are Viton seals?
Viton is a high-performance fluoroelastomer, known generically as FKM. Its high fluorine content gives it outstanding resistance to oils, fuels, lubricants and a wide range of chemicals, while keeping its sealing properties at temperatures that would quickly degrade other elastomers. That makes Viton a reliable, long-lasting choice where failure is costly and access for maintenance is difficult.
Viton seals for the oil and gas industry
Oil and gas equipment puts seals under some of the toughest conditions in industry: high temperatures, high pressures, crude oil, sour gas and drilling fluids. Viton seals are widely used in:
- wellhead and Christmas tree equipment;
- valves and actuators, including stem, seat and body seals;
- downhole tools and packers;
- pumps and compressors;
- flange and connector seals, both topside and subsea.
For high-pressure gas service, we supply rapid gas decompression (RGD) resistant compounds qualified to NORSOK M-710 / ISO 23936-2. These are designed to resist blistering and splitting when system pressure drops suddenly.
Key properties
- Excellent resistance to oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids and many chemicals
- Typical service temperatures from around -20°C up to 200°C, with low-temperature grades for colder environments
- Low gas permeability and good compression set resistance
- Strong resistance to weathering, ozone and ageing
- Specialist grades available for low temperatures, sour service and aggressive chemicals
Our Viton seal range
- Viton O-rings in all BS and metric sizes
- O-ring cord and vulcanised rings
- Bespoke seals designed to suit your application

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Viton and FKM?
FKM is the generic name for fluoroelastomer. Viton is a well-known brand of FKM. Both describe the same family of materials, and we supply both genuine Viton and equivalent FKM compounds.
What temperature can Viton seals withstand?
Standard grades handle continuous temperatures up to around 200°C, with short peaks higher. Standard Viton operates down to around -20°C, so low-temperature grades are recommended for colder applications.
Are Viton seals suitable for sour gas (H₂S)?
Some are. Standard grades can be affected by high H₂S levels, amines and hot water or steam, so we recommend talking to our technical team about your conditions before choosing a compound.
Can you supply non-standard sizes?
Yes, often on a rapid turnaround, with an unlimited choice of profiles and sizes.
